FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a Square Root Curve?
The square root curve takes the square root of the raw score and multiplies it by 10 (e.g., a score of 81 becomes 90). It heavily benefits lower scores while only slightly bumping higher scores, making it popular for exceptionally difficult exams.
What is a Flat Bump Curve?
A flat bump simply adds the exact same number of points to every student's score. This is useful if a specific question on the test was deemed unfair and you want to give everyone credit for it.
What is 'Top Score is 100'?
This curve finds the highest score in the class, calculates how many points it takes to get that score to 100, and adds that same number of points to everyone else's score.
Can I copy the curved scores back to my gradebook?
Yes! Once you calculate the curve, you can highlight the 'New Grade' column in the results table and paste it directly back into Excel or Google Sheets.
Methodology, assumptions & limitations

How we calculate: This calculator uses standard, peer-reviewed mathematical formulas implemented in TypeScript. All calculations run entirely in your browser — no data is sent to any server.

Assumptions: Unless stated otherwise, calculations assume constant rates over the specified period, no taxes or fees beyond those explicitly input, and standard compounding conventions for the formula type.

Limitations: Results are estimates for planning purposes. Real-world outcomes may differ due to variable rates, regulatory changes, taxes, fees, inflation, or other factors not modeled. This tool does not constitute professional advice.

When NOT to use this: Do not rely solely on this calculator for critical decisions where exact precision is required beyond the decimal places shown.

Feedback: Found an error or have a suggestion? Contact us — we review and correct reported issues within 48 hours.
