How is this calculated?
Annual Cost (Year N) = (Tuition + Room&Board + Books) × (1 + inflation)^(N-1)
Total Cost = Σ Annual Cost for each year
Total Aid = Scholarships × Years
Out-of-Pocket = Total Cost - Total Aid - Loans
Loan Repayment Estimate = Loans × (1 + 0.05)^10 (assuming 5% interest, 10-year term)
Monthly Loan Payment = Loans × [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1]
where r = monthly rate, n = 120 months FAQ
Frequently asked questions about college costs
How accurate is this college cost calculator?
This calculator uses national average data from College Board and NCES. Actual costs vary by institution, state residency, and individual financial aid packages. Use it as a planning baseline and confirm with specific schools.
What inflation rate should I use for college costs?
College tuition has historically risen 3-8% annually, averaging about 5%. The default 5% is a reasonable estimate. Public universities tend toward 3-4%, while private institutions often reach 4-6%.
Does this include room and board?
Yes. You can enter room and board costs separately from tuition. The calculator totals all expenses including tuition, housing, books, and supplies to give you the complete cost of attendance.
How does financial aid reduce my total cost?
Scholarships and grants reduce your out-of-pocket cost dollar-for-dollar each year. Loans reduce what you pay upfront but must be repaid with interest, so total lifetime cost is higher than the loan amount.
Should I calculate for 4 years or more?
Plan for the realistic time to graduation. While 4 years is standard, only about 41% of students at public universities graduate in 4 years. The national 6-year graduation rate is 63%. Budget conservatively.
What costs are NOT included in this estimate?
This calculator covers tuition, room & board, books, and supplies. It does not include personal expenses, transportation, health insurance, technology fees, or opportunity cost of not working full-time.
