Frequently asked questions about shipping costs
How is shipping cost calculated?
Carriers use the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight (DIM). DIM weight = (L × W × H) ÷ DIM factor (139 for domestic, 166 for international). The billable weight determines the base rate, adjusted by zone distance and speed.
What is dimensional weight?
Dimensional (DIM) weight is a pricing method that accounts for package volume. Large, lightweight packages are charged based on size rather than weight. Formula: (Length × Width × Height) ÷ 139 for domestic shipments.
Which carrier is cheapest for small packages?
USPS is generally cheapest for packages under 1 lb with First Class Mail. For 1-5 lbs, USPS Priority Mail or UPS Ground are competitive. For heavier packages, UPS and FedEx Ground often win on price for business accounts.
How do shipping zones work?
Zones 1-9 represent distance from origin to destination. Zone 1 is local (same area), Zone 9 is coast-to-coast. Higher zones cost more. USPS, UPS, and FedEx all use similar zone systems based on ZIP code distance.
Is overnight shipping worth it?
Overnight costs 3-5× more than ground. Use it only for time-sensitive items. A 5lb package might cost $12 ground vs $45-60 overnight. Consider 2-day service ($20-30) as a middle option for urgent but not emergency shipments.
How can I reduce shipping costs?
Use flat-rate boxes when package is heavy and small. Negotiate volume discounts with carriers. Use poly mailers instead of boxes for soft goods. Ship from locations closer to customers. Consider regional carriers for local deliveries.
