Speed, Distance, Time Calculator

Solve for speed, distance, or time with this free calculator. Enter any two values, choose your distance and time units, and get the third with the correct unit.

Speed, Distance, Time Calculator

Method

How this calculator works

Speed = distance ÷ time. Rearranged: distance = speed × time and time = distance ÷ speed. Speed is expressed as the chosen distance unit per time unit (for example km/h).

  1. Choose what you want to solve for: speed, distance, or time.
  2. Enter the two known values in the fields that remain visible.
  3. Select the distance unit (km, miles, or metres) and the time unit (hours, minutes, or seconds).
  4. The calculator applies speed = distance ÷ time (or its rearrangement) and shows the answer with the matching unit.

Examples

Worked examples

Real numbers, end-to-end results.

Distance 150 km, time 3 hours, solve for speed

= 50 km/h

speed = distance ÷ time = 150 ÷ 3 = 50.

Speed 60 km/h, time 2 hours, solve for distance

= 120 km

distance = speed × time = 60 × 2 = 120.

Use cases

When to use it

  • Estimating travel time for a road trip or commute.
  • Working out average running or cycling pace.
  • Solving physics homework on motion and kinematics.
  • Planning delivery or logistics schedules.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula linking speed, distance and time?
The three quantities are linked by speed = distance ÷ time. Rearranging gives distance = speed × time and time = distance ÷ speed.
How do I calculate average speed?
Divide the total distance travelled by the total time taken. If you drive 150 km in 3 hours, your average speed is 150 ÷ 3 = 50 km/h.
What units does this calculator use?
You pick the distance unit (kilometres, miles, or metres) and the time unit (hours, minutes, or seconds). Speed is then expressed as distance-unit per time-unit, such as km/h or m/s.
How do I find time from speed and distance?
Divide the distance by the speed. Make sure the distance and speed share the same distance unit so the answer comes out in your chosen time unit.
Why do I get an error when time or speed is zero?
Dividing by zero is undefined in mathematics. You cannot travel a distance in zero time, nor cover distance at zero speed, so the calculator asks for a positive value.
