Smoking Cost Calculator

Method

How this calculator works

Daily cost = (cigarettes per day ÷ cigarettes per pack) × price per pack. Weekly = daily × 7, monthly = daily × 30.44, yearly = daily × 365, and 10-year = yearly × 10.

  1. Enter how many cigarettes you smoke per day.
  2. Enter the price you pay for one pack.
  3. Adjust cigarettes per pack if your packs are not the standard 20.
  4. Review the daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, and 10-year costs shown below.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is the cost of smoking calculated?
Daily cost = (cigarettes per day ÷ cigarettes per pack) × price per pack. Weekly, monthly, yearly, and 10-year totals are then projected from that daily figure.
How many cigarettes are in a pack?
A standard pack contains 20 cigarettes, which is the default here. If your packs are a different size, change the 'cigarettes per pack' field for an accurate result.
Why use 30.44 days for a month?
30.44 is the average number of days in a calendar month (365 days ÷ 12 months). Using it gives a more accurate monthly cost than assuming every month has 30 days.
Does this include other costs of smoking?
No. This tool only estimates the direct cost of buying cigarettes. It does not include higher insurance premiums, healthcare costs, or lost productivity, which can add substantially to the true cost.
How much could I save by quitting?
Your yearly and 10-year totals are essentially the money you could keep by quitting. Many smokers are surprised to find the 10-year cost rivals the price of a car or a significant chunk of a mortgage deposit.
