How is this calculated?

Formula: Sleep times based on 90-minute cycles plus time to fall asleep.

1 Sleep Cycle = 90 minutes

Mode: "I want to wake up at [time]"
Bedtime = Wake Time − (Cycles × 90 min) − Fall Asleep Time

Mode: "I want to go to bed at [time]"
Wake Time = Bed Time + Fall Asleep Time + (Cycles × 90 min)

Suggestions for 4, 5, and 6 cycles:
  4 cycles = 6.0 hours of sleep
  5 cycles = 7.5 hours of sleep ← recommended
  6 cycles = 9.0 hours of sleep

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a sleep cycle?
A sleep cycle is a roughly 90-minute period that includes all stages of sleep: light sleep (stages 1–2), deep sleep (stage 3), and REM sleep. You typically go through 4–6 complete cycles per night. Waking at the end of a cycle (rather than in the middle) helps you feel more refreshed.
How much sleep do I actually need?
Adults generally need 7–9 hours of sleep per night (4–6 complete cycles). Teenagers need 8–10 hours, school-age children 9–12 hours. Quality matters too — consistent sleep schedules, dark rooms, and limiting screen time before bed all improve sleep quality regardless of duration.
Are naps good or bad?
Short naps (10–20 minutes) can boost alertness and performance without causing grogginess. Longer naps (60–90 minutes) allow a full sleep cycle but may cause sleep inertia upon waking and can interfere with nighttime sleep. Avoid napping after 3 PM if you have trouble sleeping at night.
Why do I feel tired after 8 hours of sleep?
Waking mid-cycle causes sleep inertia (grogginess). Even with enough total sleep, if your alarm goes off during deep sleep, you'll feel tired. This calculator helps you time sleep to wake at cycle boundaries. Other factors include sleep quality, sleep disorders, and inconsistent schedules.
How long does it take to fall asleep?
The average person takes 10–20 minutes to fall asleep (sleep latency). If you fall asleep in under 5 minutes, you may be sleep-deprived. If it takes over 30 minutes regularly, you may have insomnia. This calculator defaults to 15 minutes but you can adjust based on your experience.
