What is the golden ratio?
The golden ratio, φ (phi), is approximately 1.6180339887. Two quantities are in the golden ratio if the ratio of the larger to the smaller equals the ratio of their sum to the larger: a/b = (a+b)/a = φ.
How is the golden ratio calculated?
φ = (1 + √5) / 2 ≈ 1.618. To split a length into golden proportions, the longer part = whole ÷ φ and the shorter part = whole − longer.
