How is this calculated?
Addition: a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd (then simplify)
Subtraction: a/b − c/d = (ad − bc) / bd (then simplify)
Multiply: a/b × c/d = ac / bd
Division: a/b ÷ c/d = ad / bc
Simplify: divide both by GCD(numerator, denominator)
LCD Method: find LCM of denominators, scale numerators accordingly

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about fractions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?
Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD), convert each fraction so they share that denominator, then add the numerators. For example, 1/3 + 1/4: LCD is 12, so 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide both the numerator and denominator by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For example, 12/18: GCD is 6, so 12÷6 / 18÷6 = 2/3.
How do I convert a fraction to a decimal?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, 3/8 = 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375. If it repeats, the calculator shows the repeating pattern.
How do I multiply fractions?
Multiply numerators together and denominators together: (a/b) × (c/d) = (a×c)/(b×d). Then simplify the result. Cross-cancellation before multiplying makes it easier.
How do I divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction (take its reciprocal) and multiply: (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = (a/b) × (d/c) = (a×d)/(b×c). This is called "Keep-Change-Flip".
Is this fraction calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up required. All calculations run in your browser — your data stays on your device and is never sent to any server.
