Tipping customs vary wildly across the world. In the US, 15–20% is expected. In Japan, tipping is considered rude. The math itself is simple — it’s the social rules that are complex.
The formula
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip Percentage / 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Per Person = Total / Number of People
Quick mental math
- 10%: Move the decimal point one place left ($50 → $5)
- 15%: Calculate 10% + half of that ($50 → $5 + $2.50 = $7.50)
- 20%: Calculate 10% and double it ($50 → $5 × 2 = $10)
- 25%: Calculate 20% + 5% ($50 → $10 + $2.50 = $12.50)
Tipping by country
| Country | Standard | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| USA | 15–20% | Expected at restaurants, bars, salons |
| UK | 10–12.5% | Optional; check if service charge included |
| India | 5–10% | Round up; not always expected |
| Japan | 0% | Considered rude |
| Australia | 0–10% | Optional, for exceptional service |
| Europe | 5–10% | Varies; rounding up is common |
Bill splitting tips
- Even split: Simplest but not always fair (if someone ordered less)
- Proportional split: Each person pays their items + proportional tip
- Venmo/UPI: One person pays, others transfer their share
