Tipping customs vary wildly across the world. In the US, 15–20% is expected. In Japan, tipping is considered rude. The math itself is simple — it’s the social rules that are complex.

The formula

Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip Percentage / 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Per Person = Total / Number of People

Quick mental math

  • 10%: Move the decimal point one place left ($50 → $5)
  • 15%: Calculate 10% + half of that ($50 → $5 + $2.50 = $7.50)
  • 20%: Calculate 10% and double it ($50 → $5 × 2 = $10)
  • 25%: Calculate 20% + 5% ($50 → $10 + $2.50 = $12.50)

Bill splitting tips

  • Even split: Simplest but not always fair (if someone ordered less)
  • Proportional split: Each person pays their items + proportional tip
  • Venmo/UPI: One person pays, others transfer their share

  • For 20%: just move the decimal and double
  • Always check if service charge is already included
