Because this formula normalizes the data, a difficult shift where the highest score is 250/300 and an easy shift where the highest score is 290/300 will both yield a $100$ percentile for the top scorer.

If you know your percentile and the total number of unique candidates who appeared for the exam across all sessions, you can estimate your All India Rank (AIR) using this formula:

NEET is a pen-and-paper exam conducted in a single shift, so percentiles are less about normalization and more about ranking.

The NEET Marking Scheme

The NEET exam consists of 180 questions (out of 200 provided). The maximum score is 720.

NEET Tie-Breaking Criteria

  1. Higher marks in Biology (Botany & Zoology).
  2. Higher marks in Chemistry.

India’s constitutional reservation system significantly impacts closing ranks. The All India Quota (AIQ) seat matrix for Central Institutes is divided as follows:

1. Why do percentiles vary between shifts in JEE Main?

Because the papers are different, the difficulty varies. A score of 180 on a tough paper might be the highest in that shift, earning a $100$ percentile. A score of 180 on an easy paper might be achieved by 5,000 students, resulting in a $98$ percentile. The percentile compares you only to students who took the exact same paper as you, ensuring fairness.

2. Can I get a government medical seat with 580 marks in NEET?

For a General category student via the All India Quota (AIQ), 580 is currently insufficient (the AIQ cutoff usually hovers around 610-620). However, if you belong to a state with low competition (e.g., Assam, Chhattisgarh, or certain southern states), you might secure a state quota seat. For SC/ST categories, 580 is an excellent score that virtually guarantees a top-tier government medical college.

3. What is the difference between CRL Rank and Category Rank?

CRL stands for Common Rank List. This is your overall rank among all candidates regardless of category. Your Category Rank is your rank strictly among students of your specific category. During counseling (JoSAA for JEE or MCC for NEET), seats reserved for a category are allocated based purely on the Category Rank.

4. Is the JEE Main January attempt easier than the April attempt?

It is not necessarily “easier” in terms of paper difficulty, but statistically, it is easier to score a higher percentile at a lower score in January. Why? Because many 12th-grade students have not completed their syllabus by January. By April, everyone is fully prepared, including droppers, making the competition much fiercer. Always prioritize the January attempt!

5. What happens if I score a negative total in JEE or NEET?

While mathematically possible (by attempting many questions and getting them all wrong), it merely places you at the very bottom of the rank list. You will not qualify for JEE Advanced or any medical counseling. Your percentile will be close to $0.001$.

6. Are private medical colleges worth it if my NEET score is low?

This is a financial decision. Private medical colleges in India cost between ₹50 Lakhs to over ₹1.5 Crores for the full MBBS course. If affordability is not an issue, the degree is valid. However, many students prefer taking a “drop year” to prepare again rather than spending exorbitant amounts of money.

7. How does the ‘Home State’ quota work for NITs?

In NITs, $50%$ of the seats are reserved for students who passed their 12th board exams from the state where the NIT is located (Home State Quota). The remaining $50%$ are open to students from the rest of India (Other State Quota).
