How to Calculate GST (Exclusive to Inclusive)

When a product is priced “exclusive of GST,” you need to add the tax to find the final selling price. This is the simplest calculation.

The Formula:

GST Amount = (Base Amount × GST Rate) / 100
Net Price (Total) = Base Amount + GST Amount

Worked Example: Intra-State Sale (Same State)

You are a freelancer in Maharashtra billing a client in Maharashtra for $50,000. The GST rate for IT services is 18%. Because you are in the same state, the 18% is split into 9% CGST and 9% SGST.

Base Amount = $50,000
CGST (9%) = (50,000 × 9) / 100 = $4,500
SGST (9%) = (50,000 × 9) / 100 = $4,500

Total Invoice Value = 50,000 + 4,500 + 4,500 = $59,000

Worked Example: Inter-State Sale (Different States)

You are a freelancer in Maharashtra billing a client in Karnataka for $50,000. Because the transaction crosses state lines, you charge flat 18% IGST.

Base Amount = $50,000
IGST (18%) = (50,000 × 18) / 100 = $9,000

Total Invoice Value = 50,000 + 9,000 = $59,000

Notice that the total amount paid by the client ($59,000) is identical in both cases. The only difference is how the tax is labeled on the invoice and routed to the government.

How to Calculate Reverse GST (Inclusive to Exclusive)

This is where the math trips people up. If you buy a laptop for $59,000 “inclusive of 18% GST”, the GST amount is NOT 18% of $59,000. (18% of 59,000 is 10,620. 59,000 - 10,620 = 48,380. But 18% of 48,380 is 8,708, not 10,620!).

When the tax is already baked into the price, you have to extract it using the inclusive formula.

The Formula:

Base Price = Total Amount / [1 + (GST Rate / 100)]
GST Amount = Total Amount - Base Price

Worked Example: Extracting GST

You buy a camera for $1,18,000 which includes 18% GST. You need to know the base price to claim Input Tax Credit.

Total Amount = $1,18,000
Rate = 18%

Base Price = 1,18,000 / (1 + 0.18)
Base Price = 1,18,000 / 1.18
Base Price = $1,00,000

GST Amount = 1,18,000 - 1,00,000 = $18,000

If it was an intra-state purchase, your invoice would show:

  • Base Price: $1,00,000
  • CGST (9%): $9,000
  • SGST (9%): $9,000
  • Total: $1,18,000

The Multiplier Shortcut

To ADD 18% GST: Multiply the base amount by 1.18. (50,000 × 1.18 = 59,000)

To REMOVE 18% GST: Divide the total amount by 1.18. (59,000 / 1.18 = 50,000)

Input Tax Credit (ITC) Explained

Composition Scheme vs Regular GST

Small businesses often find regular GST compliance (filing monthly returns, maintaining detailed ITC ledgers) burdensome. To help them, the government introduced the Composition Scheme.

Regular Scheme:

  • Can charge GST from customers.
  • Can claim Input Tax Credit.
  • Must file regular monthly/quarterly returns.
  • Complex compliance.

Composition Scheme (for turnover up to $1.5 Crore):

  • Cannot charge GST from customers on invoices.
  • Cannot claim Input Tax Credit.
  • Pays a flat, nominal tax rate out of pocket (1% for traders/manufacturers, 5% for restaurants, 6% for service providers).
  • Files simplified quarterly returns.

Common GST Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Applying wrong HSN/SAC codes: Every good (HSN) and service (SAC) has a designated code that determines its GST rate. Using the wrong code can lead to short-payment of tax and subsequent penalties.
  2. Charging IGST for intra-state sales: Always verify the “Place of Supply.” If your registration state and the place of supply are the same, you must charge CGST+SGST, never IGST.
