Before any road trip, the first practical question is: “How much will fuel cost?” The formula is simple — but understanding real-world mileage vs manufacturer claims is where the real savings are.

The formula

Fuel Needed (litres) = Distance (km) / Mileage (km/L)
Trip Cost = Fuel Needed × Price per Litre
Cost per km = Trip Cost / Distance

Worked example

A 500 km trip in a car that does 15 km/L with petrol at ₹105/L:

Fuel = 500 / 15 = 33.33 litres
Cost = 33.33 × 105 = ₹3,500
Per km = ₹3,500 / 500 = ₹7.00/km

Monthly and annual projections

If you make this trip twice a month:

  • Monthly: ₹3,500 × 2 = ₹7,000
  • Annual: ₹7,000 × 12 = ₹84,000

Daily commuters with 60 km round trips (22 days/month, 12 km/L, ₹105/L):

  • Monthly: (60 × 22 / 12) × 105 = ₹11,550
  • Annual: ₹1,38,600

Why real mileage differs from claimed

Manufacturers test under ideal conditions. Real-world factors that reduce mileage:

  • City driving (stop-start): 20–30% worse than highway
  • AC usage: Reduces mileage by 5–10%
  • Tyre pressure: Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance
  • Speed: Fuel efficiency drops significantly above 100 km/h
  • Load: Extra passengers/cargo = more fuel

Track your actual mileage over 3–4 tanks by noting odometer and litres filled.

Tips to reduce fuel costs

  1. Drive at 60–80 km/h — the efficiency sweet spot
  2. Keep tyres inflated — check every 2 weeks
  3. Remove roof racks when not in use (drag)
  4. Combine errands — cold engines are least efficient
  5. Compare fuel stations — prices vary by ₹2–5/L even in the same city

TL;DR

  • Fuel cost = (distance / mileage) × price per litre
  • Real mileage is 20–30% worse than manufacturer claims in city driving
  • Track actual mileage over multiple tanks for accuracy
  • ₹7/km is typical for a petrol car doing 15 km/L at ₹105/L
