Method

How this calculator works

Your electricity cost is the sum of each appliance's power consumption (watts × hours) converted to kWh, then multiplied by your per-unit tariff rate.

kWh per appliance = Watts ÷ 1000 × Hours/day × 30

Monthly bill = Σ(all appliances kWh) × Rate per kWh
  1. Enter your cost per kWh from your electricity bill.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is electricity bill calculated?
Your bill = Total kWh consumed × cost per unit. kWh for each appliance = Wattage (W) ÷ 1000 × hours used per day × days in billing period. Add up all appliances to get total consumption.
What is a kWh?
A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is the standard unit of electricity consumption. 1 kWh = 1,000 watts used for 1 hour. A 100W light bulb running for 10 hours uses 1 kWh.
How do I find my cost per unit?
Check your electricity bill — it usually shows cost per kWh or cost per unit. In India it ranges from $3–$10/unit. In the UK it's around 24–30p/kWh. In the US it averages 12–15¢/kWh.
How can I reduce my electricity bill?
Switch to LED lighting (80% less power than incandescent). Use 5-star rated appliances. Run AC at 24°C instead of 18°C (saves 6% per degree). Unplug devices on standby. Run washing machines during off-peak hours.
