How fast you read determines how much you can learn in a given time. Here’s what the research says about reading speed and how to improve yours.

Average reading speeds

Technical material (scientific papers, legal documents) is typically read at 100–150 WPM regardless of skill level, because comprehension demands more processing time.

How to test your reading speed

  1. Choose a passage of known word count (~200–300 words)
  2. Time yourself reading it normally
  3. Answer comprehension questions to verify you actually absorbed it
  4. Calculate: WPM = Word Count ÷ Minutes

Adjusted WPM = Raw WPM × Comprehension Accuracy — this is your true reading speed.

How long do books take to read?

At 250 WPM (average adult):

BookWordsTime
The Alchemist39,0002h 36min
Atomic Habits63,0004h 12min
Harry Potter (Book 1)77,3255h 9min
Average novel90,0006h 0min
Average textbook chapter8,00032min

Speed reading techniques

  1. Reduce subvocalization — Stop “hearing” every word in your head
  2. Use a pointer — Your finger or a pen guides your eyes faster
  3. Chunking — Read groups of 3–4 words at once instead of individual words
  4. Minimize regression — Resist the urge to re-read sentences
  5. Expand peripheral vision — Take in more of the line without moving eyes

The speed-comprehension tradeoff

Research shows comprehension drops significantly above 600 WPM for most people. The sweet spot for learning is usually 300–400 WPM — fast enough to be efficient, slow enough to retain key information.
