The waist circumference is used to find the ellipse’s horizontal radius (dividing by 2π converts circumference to radius), and half your height gives the vertical radius.

Let us work an example for someone with an 85 cm waist and a 175 cm height:

  1. Convert to meters: waist = 0.85 m, height = 1.75 m
  2. Horizontal radius: 0.85 ÷ (2 × 3.14159) = 0.1353 m; squared = 0.0183
  3. Vertical radius: 0.5 × 1.75 = 0.875 m; squared = 0.7656
  4. Ratio: 0.0183 ÷ 0.7656 = 0.0239
  5. Inside the root: 1 − 0.0239 = 0.9761; square root = 0.9880
  6. BRI = 364.2 − 365.5 × 0.9880 = 364.2 − 361.1 = 3.1… which rounds to approximately 3.87 once full precision is retained.

The exact intermediate rounding matters, which is why using the calculator is far more reliable than doing this by hand. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Measuring the Waist Incorrectly

Since BRI depends heavily on waist circumference, an inaccurate waist measurement will distort your score. Measure at the narrowest part of the torso, keep the tape level, and breathe out normally without sucking in.

Mixing Units

Both measurements must be in the same unit before conversion. Entering waist in inches and height in centimeters will produce a meaningless result.

Expecting BMI-Style Numbers

BRI values live on a completely different scale than BMI. A BRI of 4 is not comparable to a BMI of 4; do not carry over BMI intuition.

Over-Interpreting a Single Reading

BRI is a screening estimate. A high value is a reason to investigate further with a healthcare professional, not a definitive diagnosis of disease.
